Although most critics insist that Unapologetic is not the singer’s best work, it is the only of her albums to ever top the US albums chart. Universal created the contest to promote “Diamonds,” the first single off of Rihanna’s seventh and latest studio album, Unapologetic. “We’re pumped about it all!” said NYU junior John Phillips, who both sang and edited vocals for the video.
NYU Local reached out to other singers and producers involved with the Clive Davis “Diamonds” video, and although many insisted upon waiting to confirm the report until Rihanna and Def Jam make an official announcement - which is expected to come next week - a few couldn’t help expressing excitement. NYU freshman Cari Fletcher, a singer in the video, made the following announcement to her Facebook artist page on January 25th of this year: “Just found out Clive Davis Institute won the Rihanna ‘Diamonds’ cover competition!!!! She’ll be coming to visit us and hang out at NYU this spring!” Rihanna herself was then to select the best rendition, whose creators would get a personal visit from the diva.Īlthough Rihanna and Def Jam have yet to publicly announce the winner, NYU Local has been tipped that our Clive Davis classmates in fact won the contest, and as a result, Rihanna will be visiting NYU’s campus to meet the winners this spring. The contest was simple: Create a video rendition of “Diamonds,” upload it to YouTube, and submit the video to Universal. Well, what you may not remember - or may have never known - is that the video was made as part of a contest created by Universal Music Group, which owns Def Jam Recordings, Rihanna’s record label. Remember that cover of Rihanna’s “Diamonds” that a group of students in NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music released at the end of last semester? Remember how the Internet freaked out about it and thought it was the best thing in the world? And remember how you totally rolled your eyes and acted like it was no big deal but secretly bragged about it to all of your state school friends?
